Business website photography: preparing a practical shot list

Plan images around customer questions and actual placements so the session produces usable, credible material.

Plan images around customer questions and actual placements so the session produces usable, credible material.

Plan the uses before the shoot

Businesses often commission website photographs and later discover they lack a banner image, consistent portraits or process shots. A list of people and rooms is not enough. Each image needs a planned role.

Review the website structure: team, service delivery, premises, outcomes and details. Identify wide compositions and small mobile thumbnails. The required crop changes what must be captured on the day.

Prepare without inventing reality

A real workplace may need tidying, rearrangement or better timing. The aim is a clear view of the business, not an impression of facilities it does not possess. Tell participants what will happen and how much time is needed.

Prepare equipment, products and spaces beforehand. Waiting for a missing item or an undecided subject wastes shooting time and can create the need for another session.

A useful shot list

  • Page location and image purpose.
  • People, products, props and setting.
  • Horizontal and vertical crops with spare framing space.
  • Space for text where the image becomes a heading background.
  • Required shot and an alternative.

Show how the work happens

Team photographs help recognition but do not explain delivery. Stages, tools and meaningful details can help customers understand the service. A calm, specific process image may be more informative than a dramatic but generic scene.

Avoid many near-identical frames when the website needs different information. A few planned applications can be more valuable than a large gallery with no suitable image for an important section.

Example: a portrait cannot become a wide banner

A tightly framed vertical portrait may work on the team page but lose part of the face when cropped for a banner. It may also leave no room for text. Layout work cannot reliably replace the missing composition.

Capture several framing options for key scenes. Check mobile crops too: a detail at the edge of a wide image may disappear. Previewing the intended application during the shoot exposes this early.

Agree delivery and future use

Confirm file formats, resolution, intended uses, selected-image quantities, editing and revisions. Clarify permissions and participation arrangements before publication rather than after using the material.

Keep original and delivery files organised with useful names. Future updates should not require searching hundreds of anonymous files to find a person, service or location.

Review in the website context

  • Are required shots and proportions available?
  • Is colour treatment consistent?
  • Do images represent the current team and offer?
  • Can lightweight files retain important detail?

A successful shoot supplies usable evidence of the business, not merely attractive photographs viewed in isolation.

Implementation plan: five steps

Define applications

List pages, headers, portraits and other uses, including proportions and text space. A good photograph may still fail a particular layout when cropping removes its essential subject.

Choose evidence of work

Plan real people, premises and meaningful service details. Record subject, location and orientation, separating essential shots from attractive extras that could consume the available session.

Prepare people and surroundings

Assign coordination and staff availability, agreeing image use. Check documents, screens and whiteboards before shooting rather than removing unintended client information later.

Preserve accuracy and organised files

Retouching should not invent equipment or standards. Agree use, formats, selection and naming, keeping originals and website versions organised for subsequent applications.

Schedule updates

Assign dates and content owners. Changes to staff, premises or services may require replacement; judge the session by useful placements and accuracy rather than delivered file count.

FAQ

Are stock images always unsuitable?

No, but they should not impersonate your staff, premises or completed work.

Is a full day necessary?

Duration follows the shot list and preparation; a focused shorter session may suffice.
