Google Ads for hotels: how to run campaigns that sell stays

Google Ads can generate bookings, but only when media is connected to the offer, availability, booking engine and booking value. Traffic alone is not a commercial result.

Google Ads can generate bookings, but only when media is connected to the offer, availability, booking engine and booking value. Traffic alone is not a commercial result.

Start with the room night you need to sell

The most expensive hotel campaign problem often begins before Google Ads is opened. The brief says “promote the hotel”, but nobody has decided which stay, date range or guest segment matters commercially. Clicks arrive and the report looks busy, while occupancy and direct revenue barely move.

A UK coastal hotel trying to fill midweek November inventory needs a different campaign from a London property protecting brand demand or a country-house hotel selling wedding and spa breaks. Define the product, booking window, margin and acceptable cost of sale first. Media should follow the commercial plan.

Separate discovery, comparison and brand intent

A search for “spa hotel Cornwall” is not the same as a search for the hotel name. One user is still building a shortlist; the other may already be deciding where to book. If both sit in one campaign, a strong brand ROAS can hide weak acquisition performance.

  • brand: hotel name and close variants
  • destination/need: location plus amenity or occasion
  • offer/date: Christmas, school holidays, weekend breaks, events
  • business demand: meetings, groups, corporate stays

Search Ads and Hotel Ads play different roles

Standard Search Ads respond to text queries. Hotel campaigns use property, price and availability data and can appear in hotel booking modules on Google Search and Maps. Google requires an up-to-date hotel list, rates and landing pages, supplied through Hotel Center or an integration partner.

The useful question is not “which format wins?” but “which stage of the booking decision does each format cover, and what does it cost to generate a confirmed stay?”

Build the account around hotel products, not an agency template

Separate brand, leisure, spa, family, business and time-sensitive products where the economics or message differ. That gives revenue and marketing teams the ability to increase pressure on need periods and reduce spend when a date is already selling strongly.

Campaign architecture should mirror how the hotel actually sells inventory. If revenue strategy changes weekly but paid search is reviewed once a month in isolation, the account will inevitably advertise the wrong dates at some point.

Sell a reason to stay, not the word “hotel”

“Book our beautiful hotel” tells the guest almost nothing. A useful ad makes the product legible: two-night spa break, family half-term stay with pool, city weekend with breakfast, or corporate rate with parking. The landing page must continue the same story.

This is not about constant discounting. A strong campaign can sell convenience, inclusions, flexibility, room type or experience. The job is to reduce uncertainty between the search and the booking decision.

Your booking engine is part of paid media performance

A guest clicking a specific offer should not land on a generic home page and rebuild the journey from scratch. Dates, inclusions and the next booking step should be obvious, especially on mobile. Hidden fees, slow availability searches or awkward room selection can erase the efficiency gained in the ad account.

When the booking engine converts poorly, adding more budget often makes the problem look larger rather than solving it. Diagnose the journey before scaling acquisition.

Optimise to confirmed booking value

Hotel reporting should connect spend with confirmed bookings, booking revenue, cost per booking, average booking value, length of stay, booking lead time and cancellations. Where possible, separate new demand from brand demand and compare direct cost of sale with the wider distribution mix.

A £1,000 booking and a £150 one-night stay should not be treated as identical conversions. Conversion value gives both the team and automated bidding a more useful signal.

Let availability and demand influence budget

Hotels are seasonal businesses. A perfectly even monthly budget can be commercially irrational. Establish rules for need periods, peak demand, brand protection and dates where the hotel is already close to the occupancy it wants.

The aim is not endless manual bid changes. It is a shared operating rhythm between marketing and revenue so that paid demand supports inventory priorities.

Do not automate bad data

Automated bidding can only respond to the signals it receives. If booking value is missing, duplicate conversions fire or cancelled bookings remain in the dataset without context, optimisation can become very efficient at producing the wrong outcome.

Review search terms, brand/non-brand split, device performance and booking economics regularly. Then step back monthly and ask the harder question: did paid search improve direct revenue at an acceptable cost of sale?

The hotel Google Ads mistakes that cost the most

  • one campaign for every audience and stay type
  • sending all paid traffic to the homepage
  • advertising dates with little or no useful availability
  • tracking booking-engine visits instead of completed bookings
  • using CTR or CPC as the main success metric
  • running media separately from revenue decisions
  • allowing price, inclusions or cancellation terms to change between ad and booking engine

A controlled 30-day test

  1. choose one commercially important product or need period
  2. separate brand and non-brand demand
  3. build a landing journey that matches the ad
  4. validate booking revenue tracking before launch
  5. set an acceptable cost-per-booking range
  6. review after enough booking data exists and diagnose the whole funnel, not just the ads

If the test disappoints, check demand, offer, rate, landing page, booking engine and measurement before declaring that Google Ads cannot work for the hotel.

Before adding budget: seven questions to answer

A hotel ready to scale Google Ads should know which dates and products actually need demand, whether the direct rate is competitive, whether the booking engine works on mobile, whether booking value is tracked, whether brand demand is separated from new acquisition, whether revenue teams see campaign insight and whether cancelled bookings are reflected in the economics. If several answers are “no”, more media normally amplifies the same weakness.

This is also a useful way to assess an agency. A partner that recommends spend before asking about occupancy, ADR, booking mix, availability and the booking engine is optimising a media account rather than the hotel business.

What a strong hotel performance partner should actually do

Good campaign management is not a weekly exercise in moving bids. It requires demand analysis, stay dates, offer quality, landing pages, search-term review and clean conversion data. The marketing team should also flag issues outside the account: a weak direct proposition, confusing booking flow or price inconsistency between ad and checkout.

That is where performance marketing becomes commercially useful. The output is not a prettier dashboard; it is a clearer view of what blocks a booking and what should change before the next pound of media is spent.

When to scale and when to stop

Scale when the hotel sees repeatable demand, trusted measurement and an acquisition cost that remains acceptable as spend rises. If cost grows faster than booking revenue, return to the market and funnel. Demand may be limited, the offer may be too generic or the direct proposition may be weaker than OTA alternatives for that stay date.

Sometimes the best marketing decision is to pause growth and fix the offer, landing page, direct-booking benefits or booking engine. Media becomes easier to scale once the underlying friction is removed.

FAQ

Can a small hotel make Google Ads profitable?

Yes, if there is enough relevant demand, the booking journey works and the hotel knows what a booking can cost. Property size is less important than unit economics and measurement.

How much should a hotel spend?

There is no universal budget. Start from booking value, margin, availability and demand, then run a controlled test rather than choosing a number because competitors appear to be advertising.

Search Ads or Hotel Ads?

They can complement each other. Search captures text-based intent and offer searches; Hotel Ads use hotel rates and availability close to property comparison.

What should be the main conversion?

A confirmed booking with its value. Enquiry clicks or booking-engine starts are useful diagnostic events, but they should not replace revenue measurement.
