Advertising in Google AI Mode: preparing an offer for conversational search

What Google is testing in AI Mode, how paid placements differ from organic results and what businesses can prepare.

What Google is testing in AI Mode, how paid placements differ from organic results and what businesses can prepare.

Conversation changes the advertising context

A customer can describe dates, budget, constraints and the desired outcome in one request. The business then needs to explain why its offer fits that situation. Google's 2026 materials describe tests of new AI Mode ads, including Conversational Discovery Ads and Highlighted Answers. This does not establish universal availability across markets or the ability to buy any position in an answer.

The placement is still identified as sponsored

Google describes a Sponsored label and Gemini-generated context alongside the advertiser's creative. A paid offer is different from an organic citation. SEO, product information and advertising play different roles. Do not promise a client that a Google Ads budget will make its business recommended in every AI response. Being eligible for an ad placement does not guarantee that it will appear.

Conversational Discovery Ads and Highlighted Answers

The first tested format is intended to tailor a message to a person's specific question. The second allows a relevant ad to be highlighted alongside recommendations in AI Mode. Both make product details and use cases important inputs. They should not be presented as universally available standalone campaign types that any advertiser can switch on with one click.

Organise information that supports a choice

Make specifications, prices, limitations, delivery or booking terms and availability consistent across the website and applicable product data. Explain use cases as well as product names. A conference room page, for example, should clarify capacity, equipment and how pricing works. This is useful offer preparation, not a guarantee that a particular venue will appear in an AI Mode advertising format.

Do not build a budget from a demonstration

Google points to AI Max and Performance Max as part of preparing for new ad experiences. That does not guarantee access to every test. Check market, language, account and format conditions. Retain a working acquisition-cost baseline. A new presentation format can justify a test; it does not justify moving the entire budget before assessing performance.

Measure only what can actually be separated

Before promising a dedicated report, inspect the account's available segments and data scope. Do not label a whole campaign's performance “AI Mode results” if that traffic cannot be isolated. On the business side, track sales, enquiry quality, cancellations and purchase delays. A different point of contact does not remove the need to compare revenue with advertising and service costs.

A practical preparation plan

First improve the offer and measurement, then check format access. Set a hypothesis, limited budget and stopping rule. Separate confirmed outcomes from assumptions about the new advertising surface. If the account lacks access, the business can still improve source information and sales handling. That work also benefits its current acquisition channels.

FAQ

Do AI Mode ads amount to paid SEO?

No. Ads are identified paid placements. Organic visibility and citations operate through separate mechanisms.

Can an ad be guaranteed in a particular answer?

No. Format access, eligibility and actual delivery are different matters. Such a promise is not justified.
