Assess MMM readiness, prepare useful data and interpret Meridian results without treating them as a guaranteed advertising return.
A different question from campaign reporting
An advertising report describes results under a platform's attribution rules. Marketing mix modelling estimates how marketing activity contributes to business outcomes using aggregated data. Google's Meridian is an open-source framework for building such models. It can support budget allocation, but it requires data, assumptions and analytical work. Connecting an account does not reveal one indisputable answer about what caused every sale.
Agree on the outcome and scope
Decide whether the model explains revenue, orders or another measure. Gross value before returns answers a different question from net sales after cancellations. Define geography, time periods and channel groupings too. If accounting practices or campaign structures changed, preserve the historical mapping. Results become difficult to interpret when successive weeks describe different kinds of business events.
History and variation both matter
Meridian's documentation offers indicative guidance on time series length and discusses data requirements separately. No universal number of weeks guarantees a reliable model. Variation in spending and the number of estimated parameters also matter. Channels that always increased together are difficult to separate. An analyst should assess the dataset before promising a precise contribution breakdown from only a few months of history.
Include influences beyond advertising
Price, product availability, seasonality, promotions and distribution changes may affect sales alongside marketing. Omitting them can assign advertising an effect it did not cause. Selecting variables requires an understanding of causal relationships; not every available column belongs in the model. Sales and operations should help reconstruct important events that an export from advertising platforms cannot explain.
Read estimates alongside uncertainty
An ROI estimate is a model result under particular assumptions. Review uncertainty intervals, fit, sensitivity and business plausibility. When channel intervals are broad and overlap, a precise ranking can create false confidence. Experiments can support calibration, but a model is not an experiment. Record which questions the available evidence cannot resolve as carefully as those it can.
Treat budget suggestions as constrained scenarios
Translate recommendations into changes the business can support. Service capacity, inventory, contracts and the need to sustain demand impose limits. A hotel cannot sell extra rooms on a date that is already full, even if a model estimates an attractive channel return. Operational knowledge belongs in the decision. Adjust spending gradually and compare observed outcomes with the scenario rather than treating a calculation as an automatic instruction.
When MMM is the right next step
Consider Meridian when several material channels, sufficient history and an unresolved budget decision justify the work. The project needs data ownership, analytical expertise and maintenance. A smaller business using one channel may benefit more from consistent sales measurement and a well-designed test. Start with a readiness assessment covering data availability, quality and the specific question the model must help answer.

FAQ
Is Meridian a paid advertising dashboard?
The core Meridian framework is open source. Analyst time, computing and model maintenance still need to be budgeted separately.
Does MMM replace attribution and experiments?
No. The methods address different questions and can complement each other when outcome definitions and periods are aligned.
