What AI access to Microsoft Advertising data enables, how to run a pilot and why reading reports is not autonomous campaign management.
What the documented scope includes
Microsoft documents an MCP server with tools for reading advertising data. MCP allows a compatible assistant to use a defined interface rather than relying only on a manually pasted file. The current tool description is read-only. It should not be presented as generally available autonomous editing of budgets and ads through ChatGPT or Claude. Check the current scope and the specific account's access before implementation.
A connection requires authorisation
The documentation covers AI client configuration and OAuth authentication. It does not provide public access to arbitrary campaigns. A company needs control over who connects an account and which rules apply in its AI environment. Administrator involvement and application configuration may be required. Interface paths can change, so use current Microsoft instructions and the chosen client's documentation for the actual setup.
A useful report starts with a precise request
“Assess the campaigns” leaves too many assumptions open. Specify the account, currency, dates, conversion definition and required breakdown. For example, compare cost and qualified leads across two complete periods and identify ad groups that deserve investigation. This is a suggested pilot task, not a guarantee that every metric is available through every tool. Missing information should be explicitly acknowledged.
Verify figures before interpreting them
During initial analyses, compare the result with the equivalent Microsoft Advertising view. Align time zones, dates, currency and conversion definitions. Calculate account CPA from total cost divided by total conversions, not by averaging campaign CPAs. Check that retrieval covers the complete dataset. A fluent explanation from an assistant does not establish that every relevant record was included.
Finding a change does not explain its cause
An assistant can help identify falling results or unusual spending. The explanation still needs investigation: the offer, stock, competitors or tracking may have changed. A weak single week is not enough reason to cut a budget. Separate observations, hypotheses and recommendations. In a long B2B sales cycle, some recent contacts will not yet have reached a final outcome.
Begin with a limited pilot
Choose one account and one recurring report. Prepare a reference result, then test several typical questions. Record the data scope and limitations of each analysis. Evaluate time saved alongside checking time, corrections and omissions. Manage employee access and the storage of results. Read-only operation limits campaign changes, but it does not remove responsibility for the business information being shared.
The agency's value is in decisions
The connection may make preparing a performance review faster. The agency still needs to verify figures, connect them to sales and justify any proposed action. Faster reporting matters when it supports a better decision. Define one measurable pilot objective, such as reducing weekly preparation time while keeping figures consistent with the platform and clearly identifying missing data.

FAQ
Can this MCP connection change a campaign budget?
The currently documented Microsoft Advertising MCP toolset is read-only. Editing capability should not be inferred from it.
Does the connection remove the need to check reports?
No. Data coverage, calculations and conclusions still need verification, particularly dates, currency and conversion definitions.
