Visible on Google, but customers are not calling: what to check

Separate visibility, phone-button clicks and answered conversations to find where a local business loses valuable enquiries.

Separate visibility, phone-button clicks and answered conversations to find where a local business loses valuable enquiries.

Do not start by buying more reach

Visibility may come from job searches, the company name or a service you no longer provide. Check which needs the current offer meets and where visitors come from. Extra impressions cannot fix a mismatch. An urgent repair service and a business requiring detailed quotations have different contact patterns and should not be assessed as if they were identical.

A phone-button click is not an answered call

Google defines calls in Business Profile performance as clicks on the call button. Do not read this as a list of completed conversations or customers. Compare profile data with your handling records: contact attempts, answered calls, relevant enquiries and orders. Systems may count different events, so their totals will not necessarily match automatically.

Test contact as a new customer

Open the profile and website on a phone. Check the number, country code, button, answering hours and out-of-hours message. Make a test call from another device. Ensure it reaches an active number and someone who understands the offer. Provide a form or messaging alternative for people who cannot or do not want to speak immediately.

Explain why making contact is worthwhile

Customers need to understand the service, area covered, suitability and what happens after they call. A fixed price is not always possible, but explain the quotation process and information required. Vague copy forces people to guess. Current work examples, photographs and conditions help establish fit without promising outcomes the business cannot reliably deliver.

Organise answering and follow-up

Assign responsibility for missed calls and handovers. Record only information needed for the next contact and the stage reached. Not every missed call is a lost customer, but unanswered attempts need a process. If the team is consistently overloaded, limit promotion to the services and appointments it can realistically deliver rather than generating more unmet demand.

Follow the path from conversation to order

An illustrative example of 40 contact attempts, 28 answered calls, 18 suitable enquiries and six orders contains four different measures. Weakness may lie in availability, traffic quality or the offer. Define the counting rules and period. Include later purchases before labelling a week unsuccessful or deciding that a channel produces no business value.

Fix one bottleneck at a time

Repair a broken phone route first. If callers want the wrong service, adjust messaging and traffic sources. If suitable customers leave after pricing, examine scope, terms and the conversation. Compare equivalent periods and account for seasonality. The goal is not the maximum number of calls but more well-handled enquiries capable of becoming profitable sales.

FAQ

Does Google’s calls metric show answered conversations?

No. In Business Profile performance it counts call-button clicks. Check answering and outcomes in your own handling process.

Is more advertising always the answer?

No. Check contact functionality, offer fit and existing enquiry handling first. More traffic can amplify the problem.
