Hotel advertising in ChatGPT. How ChatGPT Ads work and whether hotels should test them

ChatGPT Ads are already available to advertisers in the United Kingdom. Here is how a hotel can approach the channel without confusing paid advertising with an organic ChatGPT recommendation.

ChatGPT Ads are available in the United Kingdom. What actually works?

OpenAI currently offers self-service Ads Manager in the United Kingdom. Ads can be shown to users on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users do not see them.

The ad appears below the ChatGPT response and is clearly labelled as sponsored. The current format can include the advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, landing page and image. A hotel is not buying a place inside the model’s answer; it is buying a separate ad unit.

An ad in ChatGPT is not a ChatGPT recommendation

OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT answers. An advertiser cannot pay to make the model rank a hotel higher in an organic answer or present it as a recommended property.

Organic mentions of a hotel are a separate topic involving brand visibility, sources and information available to the model. ChatGPT Ads, GEO and AI SEO should not be treated as the same thing.

A hotel in search and a hotel in a conversation can reflect different intent

A Google user may type “hotel Kołobrzeg”. In ChatGPT, the same person may describe a family weekend by the sea, a pool, proximity to the beach, dates and budget. The conversation can reveal much more context.

OpenAI uses the context and intent of the current conversation as one of the ad-selection signals. Advertisers can also provide contextual guidance. It is not the same as exact-match keywords and does not guarantee that a specific prompt will trigger a specific hotel ad.

Do not advertise the hotel. Advertise a clear reason to stay

A vague message such as “the best hotel by the sea” gives the guest very little to act on. A better starting point is a product that can be understood in seconds.

  • Spa weekend for two.
  • Family winter break on the Baltic coast.
  • City break in central Kraków.
  • Sunday-to-Thursday off-season stay.
  • Business package with parking and breakfast.
  • Family holiday with pool and activities.

These are not special OpenAI ad formats. They are hotel products that can be communicated consistently in the ad, landing page and booking engine.

How to structure a hotel campaign

Ads Manager supports campaigns, ad groups and creative variants. One ad group should focus on one coherent theme or intent area. For a hotel, that means avoiding one group that mixes spa, conferences, family holidays, weddings and city breaks.

A stronger test uses one offer, several message variants and a landing page aligned with that offer. The result is easier to measure and the user journey is more coherent.

Geo-targeting, dates and seasonality

ChatGPT Ads supports country targeting and additional supported locations such as regions, cities and postcodes where available. Availability varies by country, so a UK advertiser should check the location picker in the current Ads Manager. New product-feed campaigns support country-level targeting only.

In hospitality, geography is only part of the decision. Marketing should follow the sales calendar. If a holiday weekend is already almost full, extra budget may be unnecessary. A weak November weekend or low midweek occupancy may be a better test.

ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads, Meta Ads and OTAs

Google Ads are strong when a traveller actively searches for a specific query. Meta Ads can build demand through creative and remarketing. OTAs are distribution and sales channels that bring access to a large market but usually involve commission and less control over the guest relationship.

ChatGPT Ads enter at another moment: during a conversation in which a traveller may still be defining needs, comparing options or planning the trip. Whether that moment is commercially competitive has to be proven by data.

The landing page and booking engine matter more than the novelty of the ad format

If the ad promotes a spa weekend, the click should land on the spa weekend offer, not a generic homepage. The guest should quickly understand price or how to check it, package inclusions, dates and conditions.

The booking engine is the next critical step. If it is slow on mobile, repeats data entry or feels disconnected from the hotel site, the campaign can generate clicks without bookings. ChatGPT Ads do not fix conversion problems after the click.

How much can hotel advertising in ChatGPT cost?

OpenAI supports CPM and CPC buying and also documents conversion-optimised objectives for suitable campaigns. There is no single click price for hotels. Delivery is auction-based and takes relevance into account.

Current OpenAI campaign documentation lists a minimum daily budget of GBP 15 for accounts billed in pounds sterling. Actual CPC or CPM is auction-based and should be judged against leads, bookings or sales rather than a promised fixed rate.

How to measure bookings from ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI provides Pixel and Conversions API. Click identifiers and standard UTM parameters can support attribution between the ad, hotel site and later conversion.

A hotel report should go beyond impressions, CTR and CPC. Measure bookings, booking value, cost of sale, length of stay, arrival date and cancellations. If the booking engine limits tracking, plan an alternative measurement path before spending budget.

What ChatGPT Ads will not fix

  • an offer guests do not understand,
  • a weak mobile website,
  • a low-converting booking engine,
  • pricing detached from the market,
  • poor reviews and reputation issues,
  • lack of availability for the dates being advertised.

If the real bottleneck sits in one of these areas, more traffic can simply send more people into the same problem.

What a sensible first hotel test looks like

Start with one offer and one clear sales problem. Use a dedicated landing page, several ad variants, correct tracking and a budget that can be compared with Google Ads, Meta Ads and the cost of OTA distribution.

After the test, do not ask only whether there were many clicks. Ask how many valuable bookings were generated, what the cost of sale was and whether the campaign helped sell the dates the hotel actually needed to support.

Direct booking and OTAs: compare cost of sale, not CPC

Hotels can usually calculate transaction value and channel cost relatively well. OTA cost includes commission and commercial conditions. Direct advertising cost includes media, management, technology and any discounts or benefits offered to the guest.

The useful question is not whether a ChatGPT click is cheaper than a Google click. It is how much it costs to acquire a booking of a given value and what that booking contributes to the direct guest relationship.

Creative should help the guest make a decision

OpenAI recommends testing multiple headline and description variants focused on concrete benefits. For hotels, that usually means moving away from empty phrases such as “luxury in the heart of nature” when they say nothing about the actual product.

A variant can emphasise dates, guest type, a package component or booking convenience. Whatever the ad promises must genuinely be available on the landing page.

When not to start with ChatGPT Ads

If the hotel cannot measure booking sources, has an outdated site, inconsistent pricing or does not know which dates need support, a new channel may only add noise. Fix analytics, offer and booking flow first.

The test makes more sense when the hotel can name the problem: weak midweek demand, a specific package, a new product, entry into a market or the need to grow direct share.

FAQ

Can a hotel advertise in ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI’s current documentation lists the United Kingdom as a self-service Ads Manager market. Ads can be shown to Free and Go users and are separated from ChatGPT answers.

How much does hotel advertising in ChatGPT cost?

Current OpenAI campaign documentation lists a minimum daily budget of GBP 15 for accounts billed in pounds sterling. Actual CPC or CPM is auction-based and should be judged against leads, bookings or sales rather than a promised fixed rate.

Will ChatGPT Ads replace Google Ads for hotels?

There is no basis to assume that. Google Search captures a great deal of explicit travel demand. ChatGPT Ads enter a different context and should be judged on booking value and cost of sale.

Can a ChatGPT ad lead directly to the booking engine?

An ad contains a destination URL, so the user can be sent to a dedicated landing page or an appropriate booking flow, provided it accurately matches the advertised offer.

How should a hotel measure ChatGPT Ads bookings?

Use Pixel or Conversions API where possible, add UTM parameters and reconcile Ads Manager data with the hotel website, booking engine and reservation revenue. CTR alone does not show whether the campaign makes money.
