Hotel marketing audit: what to check before increasing advertising spend

Review your hotel's offer, website, booking journey, campaigns and measurement. Find sales obstacles and prioritise practical improvements.

More advertising spend does not always solve an empty calendar. A hotel may reach unsuitable guests, send them to an unclear offer or lose demand during booking. Reports may even suggest success that reception and sales cannot confirm. An audit should establish where the loss occurs and what to fix first.

A useful hotel marketing audit connects data, offer and the actual guest journey. It should not end with an automated website score or hundreds of technical observations. Its outcome needs to be decisions, responsibilities and an achievable order of work.

Define the symptom you want to explain

“Marketing is not working” is too broad. Specify whether the problem is weekday occupancy, a particular package, direct booking share or group enquiry quality. These require different information and tests.

Select a period and segment. Comparing months without seasonality, holidays, available rooms and spending can mislead. Record price, offer and facility changes too. The audit needs to understand the product actually sold during the period.

Check data before interpreting performance

Establish what analytics events mean. Clicking a booking button, entering an engine and completing a reservation should not be treated as one conversion. Check duplicate events, currency, value and whether test bookings distort reports.

Google distinguishes events including generate_lead and purchase. The GA4 documentation explains their purposes. Naming an event does not validate its implementation.

Compare reporting with the reservation system and completed stays. Differences can reflect cancellations, attribution, consent, timing and integration limitations. The aim is not to force every number to match, but to understand which decisions a report can reliably support.

Review the offer as a prospective guest would

Open a stay page without prior knowledge of the hotel. Is the audience, date range, included value and booking route clear? Do photographs help assess the room and experience? Are restrictions visible before purchase?

An unclear offer can weaken several channels at once. Extensive facilities alone do not establish a reason to visit. Families, couples and conference organisers need different answers. Organise those before purchasing more traffic.

Complete the booking journey on a phone

Test the advertisement landing page, dates, occupancy, room type, final price, terms, payment and confirmation. Check language changes, backward navigation and differences between the offer and system. Use an actual device, not just a design preview.

Test unavailable dates too. Does the guest receive another option, alternative dates or a useful contact? Empty inventory results can end a visit even when someone is ready to buy. An availability issue and a technical failure are different problems and need separate treatment.

Separate campaign performance from product readiness

Review targeting, searches, assets, landing pages and the availability of promoted dates. Check whether campaigns advertise an unbookable package or attract large amounts of traffic outside the intended market.

Distinguish searches for the hotel name from acquiring people unfamiliar with it. Account for campaign objectives and decision stage. One metric cannot properly compare awareness activity with sales of a specific offer.

Include reception and sales in the audit

Ask for enquiry examples, response times and follow-up outcomes. The hotel may attract valuable interest and then respond late or send an offer that is hard to understand. Record genuine reasons for lost sales instead of adding convenient explanations the guest never gave.

For groups, check ownership of the enquiry, proposal preparation and follow-up. For individual stays, examine recurring questions and contact availability. A marketing audit should identify service dependencies even when another manager must decide the operational changes.

The website's role: Arka Medical SPA

MB Digital Marketing coordinated the website project on Arka Medical SPA's side, covering offer, UX, mobile and direct booking. Read the case study (PL).

For another hotel, the audit question is whether the site helps a particular guest decide. Comparing colours or section counts is insufficient. Examine what information appears at each stage and where the route to reservation breaks down. The documented project's results are not a forecast for a different property.

Turn an observation into a test rather than guessing

Suppose advertising drives visits while reservations decline. One hypothesis concerns unsuitable traffic, another the offer and another unavailable dates. Do not select the explanation behind the most persuasive slide. Check pages, devices and inventory during the campaign, then compare with actual bookings.

Another scenario: reports show many conversions but the hotel sees fewer transactions. Establish the event definition and perform a controlled journey. A button click can be a useful interest signal, but should not pretend to be a purchase. Correct reporting does not immediately create sales; it makes evaluation honest.

A third example concerns groups. Form volume is stable but fewer enquiries reach quotation. Review information completeness, ownership and response time before changing campaigns. A better form or clearer proposal process may be more useful than additional acquisition spend.

Every test needs a period, scope and comparison method. Limit simultaneous changes when they would prevent interpretation. Urgent repairs need not stop, but record what changed and when. An audit should reduce uncertainty rather than replace it with another collection of unverified opinions.

What should an audit report contain?

Each recommendation needs an observation, evidence, likely impact, proposed action and verification method. Separate confirmed errors from hypotheses needing tests. Where a cause is unknown, the report should say so rather than present a guess as a diagnosis.

  1. Blockers: broken forms or reservations, wrong prices and missing essential information.
  2. Offer improvements: package structure, copy, assets and consistent communication.
  3. Acquisition improvements: campaigns, targeting, destinations and spending allocation.
  4. Review plan: responsible person, deadline and evidence that will show whether the change helped.

Not every observation has equal priority. Repairing booking may be more urgent than a cosmetic adjustment. Missing data may require an observation period before judging a campaign. Priorities should follow the property's problem rather than an automated scanner's order.

How to commission a hotel marketing audit

Send the website, property type, main markets and problem description. Explain your channels, sales responsibilities and available data. Access should match the analysis scope, while implementing changes should be agreed separately.

Ask MB Digital Marketing about an audit. We can discuss a review of offer, website, booking, campaigns and measurement, and prepare a quotation. Also see our article on evaluating a hotel's marketing agency.

Does an audit require changing agencies?

No. It can improve the current collaboration and identify missing data, responsibilities or work. Conclusions need evidence.

Does weak campaign performance always mean poor advertising?

No. Offer, price, inventory, reservations and enquiry handling can all contribute. That is why we examine the journey, not only the advertising account.

Where should we start?
